What it's like

Far Niente is a restored stone winery with gardens, pouring classic Oakville Cabernet. This is a seated, appointment-led visit rather than a drop-in at a bar. Every tasting involves some walking and stairs, so if that's a concern, call the winery at (707) 944-2861 and ask about assistance.

Who it's best for

Adults who want a paced, hosted visit and are happy to plan ahead. Small groups fit best, since most options are for parties of 2 to 6 (the Great Hall Heritage Group Tour & Tasting takes up to 8). Pets, children and guests under 21 can't be accommodated.

What to book

Reservations are required, and you book through Tock. We'd choose by how much time you want to spend:

  • Far Niente Legacy Tour & Tasting ($175 per person, 90 minutes): a guided tour, then a seated tasting of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with cheeses.
  • Private Legacy Tasting ($150 per person, 90 minutes): seated in the Great Hall with artisanal cheeses.
  • Great Hall Heritage Group Tour & Tasting ($150 per person, 90 minutes): a guided tour and seated group tasting, for parties of 2 to 8.
  • Il Dolce Far Niente Private Tasting ($130 per person, 60 minutes): an outdoor tasting beneath the cork trees with a seasonal cheese plate.
  • Cave Collection Library Wine Tasting with Food Pairings ($295 per person, 60 minutes): Cave Collection wines paired with food from the estate chef.

The shorter outdoor tasting is the easiest to fit around other plans. The tour options suit anyone who wants to see the property as well as taste.

How it fits into a day

The winery welcomes guests daily, and its visit page lists 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. The contact page gives 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, so confirm the time when you book and check your appointment slot. Allow the full 90 minutes for the longer tastings, plus time to arrive at 1350 Acacia Drive without rushing.

We'd treat this as an anchor appointment: book it first, then build the rest of the day around it. A late-morning slot leaves room for lunch afterward, and an early start keeps the day unhurried. Since you'll be tasting, arrange a designated driver, a driver-led tour or a rideshare. Please confirm with the winery if you're coming from far away and need a ride back.
