Winery in Calistoga, Napa Valley
★ 4.2 (5,201 Google reviews) · Castle · Good for groups
What it's like
The winery is built as a 14th-century Tuscan-style castle, and it's a full-scale one. For many visitors, the building is the main event. It's a very different setting from the typical tasting room, and that is why it works so well for people who are new to the valley. We'd call it a crowd-pleaser, and that's the reason it keeps showing up on first-time itineraries.
The address is 4045 St Helena Hwy, Calistoga, CA 94515.
Who it's best for
First-timers, and groups in particular. If you're traveling with a mix of wine enthusiasts and people who are along for the ride, a castle gives everyone something to look at and talk about, whatever their interest in wine.
What to book
Visits are by reservation only, so plan ahead rather than counting on a walk-in. Reservations can be made online at https://castellodiamorosa.com/home2 or by phone with the Reservation Department at 707.967.6272. Check the current tasting options and fees on the winery's booking page.
A few booking details worth knowing:
- Online bookings carry a flat $4.95 booking fee, and it doesn't go up with the number of people in your party.
- Full refunds or changes are available up to 24 hours before your reservation date. Inside that window, there are no refunds or changes.
Hours and holidays
The castle is open by reservation daily, 10:00am to 5:30pm. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. On Christmas Eve, December 24th, hours are shortened to 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
How it fits into a day
Because every visit is booked in advance, the castle works well as the anchor of your day. Choose your reservation time first, then build the rest of the day around it. A late-morning slot leaves the afternoon open for lunch and a second stop. An early-afternoon slot lets you start the day slowly. Check driving times between stops when you plan the rest of your route.
Getting there and getting home
The winery sits on St Helena Highway, so you'll be driving or arriving by tour or rideshare. If you're tasting, name a designated driver ahead of time, or book a tour or a rideshare so nobody has to drive after the visit.
